FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

Q Why haven't I heard about the Ultra MD™ laser system before now?
A The Ultra MD™ CO2 laser system has been manufactured since 1981.
The MD was the first CO2 laser that used the "sealed tube" design. This revolutionized the CO2 laser industry. No longer were OR nurses responsible for mounting, regulating, and inventorying tanks of gas to support their CO2 laser.

Dr. Robert Rudkow of MIT developed the sealed tube and incorporated it into the earliest models of CO2 MD laser systems. For many years several different laser companies under an OEM agreement marketed the MD laser under their name. Dr. Rudkow and Laser Engineering of Milford Massachusetts sold the manufacturing and distribution rights to SSI of Nashville, TN in 1995. Since that time SSI has continued to innovate, manufacture and distribute under the name LEI Ultra MD™.

Q Who can use the Ultra MD™ laser system?
A The Ultra MD™ is designed as a multispecialty surgical laser that is easily applied from one surgical specialty to another. The Ultra MD™ is used effectively in GYN (both upper and lower reproductive tract surgeries), ENT, Aesthetic and Cosmetic surgeries, Neurosurgery, General surgery, and other specialties.

Q What accessories are available to be used with the Ultra MD™?
A LEI provides a micromanipulator and a standard 125mm hand piece with every laser sold. Other accessories for laparoscopy, LAUP, Skin Resurfacing, Sinus surgery and other applications are sold separately.

Q Is the Ultra MD™ compatible with laser accessories that work with other manufacturer's lasers?
A Yes, some manufacturers articulated arms have a different screw thread for attaching the accessory to the laser. LEI can supply an adapter that will allow a wide variety of accessories, including after-market companies' products to be used with the Ultra MD™.

Q Laser equipment seems to become obsolete very quickly.
How does LEI insure the laser will not be outdated in a few years?

A The Ultra MD™ has been designed with the idea that laser applications and equipment needs are constantly changing. When a laser system requires newer technology to meet the needs of surgery, LEI has a flexible plan. Rather than forcing the customer to purchase a new laser system, LEI can easily upgrade an old system to perform as new. Whether a simple upgrade or a complete refurbishment is required, the Ultra MD™ is built for change!

Q What types of clinical support does LEI offer?
A Upon installation of a customer's laser system, the clinical specialist (a registered nurse) will come and conduct a thorough inservice to familiarize the surgical staff with the laser system and its operation. The nurse specialist will also be with the customer for the first day of surgeries, to insure a smooth transition for the new laser.

Q What other types of clinical support is available?
A LEI has a wide variety of educational products designed to bring even the busiest operating room into regulatory compliance. Training for the Laser Safety Officer is essential for a safe laser program for any health care facility. Our educational staff can fully educate and credential LSO's. The Laser Nurse Workshop, a two-day seminar, will help bring your entire laser team into a heightened awareness of those safety measures necessary for compliance to all regulatory agencies. Joint Commission, OSHA, ANSI, etc.

Physician credentialling and refresher courses are also available. CEU contact hours are awarded to Registered Nurses attending our courses. Our educational staff can also audit your current policies and procedures, make recommendations for updating, and establish an ongoing inservice program. All education is in accord with the ASLMS (American Society for Lasers in Medicine and Surgery) guidelines and is compliant with the ANSI standards.

Q What is the warranty like?
A LEI has the best warranty in the industry. There is a one-year warranty "bumper to bumper" on the laser system. And a three-year warranty on the laser tube itself. No other company can offer this type of security. All service work performed during the warranty period includes parts, labor, and travel expenses.

Q Who provides service for the Ultra MD™?
A LEI has a service network that covers the entire nation. Service technicians will be local to most major metropolitan areas. This provides to our customers 24 hour response to service requests regardless of their location.
